Heart of Fire An Immigrant Daughter’s Story
by Mazie K Hirono United States Senator
ISBN: 978-1-984-88160-1
Mazie tells of her childhood with memories going back to the age of 3. At the age of 9 her mother left Japan and brought her and the older brother to Hawaii. She knew no English when coming to Hawaii. This was when Hawaii was a US Territory, later to become a state.
She served as a state representative and as Hawaii’s lieutenant governor before winning election to Congress is 2006.
I have never been one to follow politics, political parties or what is going on in the government, at least not closely.
I found this book to be a lot more interesting than I ever imagined. I also learned a lot. It was enjoyable reading of her childhood and how hard they worked to survive in poverty. As she grew up, her college activities. What it takes to run a political campaign whether on a small or large scale. Then how it is that bills get passed, or not, in the government.
She give details on many bills. Her disappointment on ones that didn’t pass, elation on those that did. Her fights were not just for immigrants, but also women’s rights, housing, insurance, racism, and more.
She’s pretty well known in the government arena, which, since I don’t follow politics, I had no idea. While reading this book I have stopped to watch some of her news conferences on YouTube.
I can say that I do recommend this reading. I’m sure I’m not the only one in the dark about such things.
